Dale Steyn claimed 5-63 as South Africa completed a comfortable innings and 129-run win over Bangladesh in Bloemfontein to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.
Bangladesh, who were bowled out for 153 in their first innings in reply to the Proteas’ 441-9 declared, managed only 159 second time round and batted out less than 90 overs in the entire match.
Paceman Steyn was the leading bowler on show as he collected his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests, while Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis each claimed two wickets.
“We knew they have a very good bowling attack with world-class pacers in operation. However, I still think we could have played them better,” Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful told reporters afterwards.
“It's true that we are not used to playing on wickets that have bounce but we tried to prepare the best we could. It is difficult for any visiting team in South Africa and not just us.”
The second and final Test starts on Wednesday in Centurion. South Africa will be without their regular left-arm spinner Paul Harris after he broke his left thumb minutes before the first Test and therefore was forced to play.
