About Me
Profile: Mohammad Ashraful's 114 against Sri Lanka meant he became the youngest-ever player to score a Test century, on September 8 2001 at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club, to beat a 40-year-old record set by Pakistan's Mushtaq Mohammad (who was 17 years 82 days). Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this achievement was the fact that his side were under huge pressure after being bowled out for just 90 in their first innings and then conceding 555-5 declared. But the task and probable innings defeat did not faze Ashraful who batted for over four hours. It was also made against an attack consisteing of world record-breaking off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and veteran left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas. Another quite brilliant innings of 100 in just 101 balls, in a one-day international against world champions Australia at Cardiff in 2005, helped his team to a shock win and was further evidence of his talent. Unfortunately, the burden of captaincy and a lack of world-class bowlers to back up his leadership has maybe been too much of a weight on his young shoulders and he has struggled to maintain the standards he has set in the past.
